San Diego, California, USA (25 September 2006) — The Alliance for Enterprise Security Risk Management (AESRM), a partnership of the three leading international security associations — ASIS International, ISACA and the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) — today presented Dave Tyson, MBA, CPP, CISSP, with the first-ever AESRM Excellence in Security Convergence Award.
David Kent, Vice President of Security for Genzyme Corporation, and Dave Morrow, CISM, Chief Security and Privacy Officer for EDS, were the two other finalists for the award.
The award was created to honor individuals who are leading the growing field of “security convergence,” which is the integration of traditional and information security functions. Thirty-three entries were received, nominating security professionals from around the world for the first installation of this award.
“We are thrilled to have received so many high-quality nominations from such a variety of global organizations, particularly in the award’s inaugural year,” said Ray O’Hara, CPP, Chairman of AESRM. “We congratulate Dave Tyson, the finalists and everyone who participated in the award competition, and thank them all for the role they are playing in advancing the security profession through convergence.”
Tyson, Chief Security Officer for the City of Vancouver in Canada, is a member of all three AESRM partner organizations and has played an active role in the formation and initiatives of the AESRM to promote convergence and enterprisewide risk management.
Dubbed “Mr. Convergence” by Canadian Security magazine, Tyson is considered to be one of the thought leaders in the field of security convergence and one of the few practitioners to successfully implement convergence in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment such as the City of Vancouver.
All nominations/entries were judged by at least two representatives from each of the AESRM partner organizations. Among the criteria for the award was extensive leadership in improving the convergence of traditional and information security throughout an organization. The award also recognizes progress in areas such as: improved security and decreased risk within an enterprise; achieved demonstrable ROI/cost savings; convergence progress achieved in all three domains of people, process and technology; and demonstrated leadership in sharing convergence accomplishments outside of one’s own enterprise.
Tyson was recognized for his achievements and presented with the AESRM Excellence in Security Convergence Award at a special awards luncheon during the ASIS International 52nd Annual Seminar and Exhibits, being held September 25-28 in San Diego, Calif.
Earlier this month, AESRM — as part of its commitment to raising awareness of the need for a broad and unified method of addressing enterprise security — released Convergent Security Risks in Physical Security Systems and IT Infrastructures, an overview examination of the issues related to the converged security risks in physical security systems and IT infrastructures.
